Savile Row Travel

Overlooking the pristine southern coast of beautiful Sri Lanka, Shangri-La's Hambantota Resort & Spa is located along the ancient Spice Route in a city steeped in rich history.

Hambantota is known for its natural beauty and wildlife, and allows visitors to explore Asia’s most fascinating nature sanctuaries, including the Yala and Bundala National Parks. The luxury resort spans 53 hectares, making it the largest resort in Sri Lanka, and boasts 300 spacious rooms, including 21 suites, all surrounded by stunning tropical gardens.

The opening of the breathtaking Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa has brought all of the hallmarks of Shangri-La – exemplary service, a modern design, the signature CHI, The spa and innovative dining options – to the shores of Sri Lanka. Set in 53 acres, the resort sits on a beautiful stretch of golden sand and offers a wide range of facilities including The Village, which is an artisan centre where you can browse and buy locally-created arts and crafts. The resort is also one of the first on the island to have its very own golf course, the 18-hole Shangri-La’s Golf and Country Club, perfect if you are looking to enjoy a round or two during your holiday. Younger guests are will catered for with the Cool Zone Kids Club, as well as a wide selection of activities you can enjoy together as a family.

There are three restaurants here, including the main restaurant Bojun Hala, where you can sample the very best of Sri Lankan cuisine, and Sera which is inspired by the hawker stalls of South East Asia. In this casual venue you can enjoy an interactive experience as street fare dishes are created as you watch. One of the most innovative dining venues is the Beach Grill, a mobile kitchen which features a fire pit on which the catch of the day is prepared. A snack bar, club house and two bars complete the drinking and dining options.

Accommodation ranges from Deluxe Rooms, which overlook the resort’s tropical gardens, and Premier Rooms which have golf course, lagoon or ocean views to hugely spacious suites which have a separate lounge/dining room and come complete with butler service. We love the modern light-filled décor with touches of Sri Lankan design elements throughout – it’s a real mix of Shangri-La’s style and local flavour.

Shangri-La’s signature CHI, The Spa, is a place of personal peace, enchantment and well-being that features exceptional Chinese and Ayurvedic treatments. A health club, a 30-metre sunset pool and an additional free-form lagoon pool offer recreational opportunities and facilities unparalleled in Sri Lanka.

Families are given a warm welcome at the resort with a range of services designed especially for them. The Cool Zone Kids Club is open every day and there are plenty of other activities to keep younger guests happy with a 7m high trapeze, a drone flying area, outdoor water park, childrens’ pool and childcare facilities. Feel reconnected, energised and enjoy the great outdoors.

Dining

Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa offers guests a wide variety of dining options to satisfy any craving. Enjoy local Sri Lankan food at Bojunhala and dishes inspired by the famous hawker stalls of Southeast Asia at Sera. In addition, Gimanhala and Ulpatha provide a fine selection of refreshments throughout the day. The hotel’s main restaurant Bojunhala, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, is a buffet restaurant with a difference. You can discover how a selection of the resort’s signature dishes at the interactive food stations or enjoy one of the many theme nights held here. There’s an area set aside where there are cooking stations tailored to children – a perfect way to keep younger guests amused and entertain while they dine. Alongside the buffet dishes, there’s an a la carte menu featuring favourites from all over the island. Cuisine from South East Asia created with locally-sourced ingredients are the focus at the fine-dining restaurant Sera, and just like those at Bojunhala, the dishes are prepared in open kitchens.

There are two bars at the resort – Gimanhala and Ulpatha. The former is a delightfully casual open-air venue close to the lobby where you can enjoy afternoon tea, a cocktail or glass of Champagne at sundown and a post-dinner drink. Ulpatha, which translates to ‘watering hole’, is a sports bar located next to the golf course.

Golf

Sri Lanka’s premier 18-hole golf course is set amid a vast coconut palm plantation within the resort, offering spectacular views and distinctive challenges for both casual and seasoned players.

The beautifully landscaped par-70 course takes you on a memorable golf experience through three landscaped zones, each with its own unique character:

  • The Coconut Plantation, offering lush fairways and challenging bunkers
  • The Dune Area, with its subtle elevation changes gives you breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean
  • The Sapphire Mine, showcasing generous greens with an abundance of water features

Because of our dedication to biodiversity and habitat protection, the course development was approached from an eco-perspective by revitalising an abandoned sapphire mine, restoring vegetation, re-introducing birdlife and using salt-tolerant turf.

The Pro Shop is equipped with golfing essentials, and all golf equipment can be hired. In addition, electric buggies can be provided to enhance the comfort of our golfers.

Shangri-La’s Golf and Country Club is open for international, regional and local tournaments. Local memberships are also available.

Facilities

CHI, The Spa

CHI, The Spa, at Shangri-La draws inspiration from the origins of the Shangri-La legend, which describes a place of personal peace, enchantment and well-being. Guests can have a private consultation with nutritionists and ayurvedic doctors that will develop a personalised wellness programme just for them.

Located in a secluded area of the resort, CHI, The Spa offers twelve treatment rooms decorated in Shangri-La’s signature CHI style that are complimented by local design elements. The spa menu includes Chinese and Ayurvedic treatments, a speciality of Sri Lanka, and our therapists use 100% natural spa products.

In traditional Chinese philosophy, “ch’i “, or “qi”, is the universal life force that governs well-being and personal vitality. For good health to be maintained, it is believed that ch’i must flow freely within the body. On the other hand, when ch’i is blocked, disease and illness follow. Movement is therefore a key element of our signature therapies. Forming the basis of the CHI, The Spa philosophy, body massage, exercise, stretching, hydrotherapy, and moving the mind through relaxation practices and meditation combine to assist the body’s natural renewal process.
