Explore Hue’s forbidden city on a Vietnam tour

Prepare to be delighted by the sights and sounds, bewitched by the people’s geniality and divine cuisine, captivated by fast-moving cities and enlightened by the palaces and cathedrals. During your wonderful trip across Vietnam, you will venture into the jungle’s vines and creepers towards temples, shrines, art and architecture, and wander through the ancient exuberant cities of Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, before cruising across the sparkling waters of Halong Bay, passing some of the 3,000 limestone islands.
Upon arrival into Hue, start with an escorted ride through the streets, travelling by bicycle, for a view of the city from street level. Hue, a central Vietnam city which used to be the capital from 1802 to 1945, is sprawling with palaces and culinary delights. One of the most eye-catching sights is the vast, 19th-century Đại Nội Citadel, surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls. It encompasses the Imperial City, the Forbidden Purple City, and a replica of the Royal Theatre. The city is in a ‘sweet spot’ within Vietnam, less polluted than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh, but quieter and less touristy than Hoi An or Halong Bay.
The Perfume River crosses the city of Hue in the central Vietnamese province of Thua Thien Hue. Around 80 kilometres long, the river’s name originates from the aromatic plants of the forests it flows through, carrying a pure and fresh aroma on its journey to Hue. In the autumn, flowers from orchards upriver from Hue fall into the water, adding to the beautiful scent and poetic nature of the river.
Drift along the river’s waters onboard a traditional Vietnamese boat for one of the most beautiful experiences of your life. Choose to head out during the day or at night, when lights and lanterns line the river and add to the beauty. Watch as the moonlight bounces across the surface of the river, with only the songs of the boat rowers breaking the silence.
Along the river, there are numerous stops you can make: visit Da Vien, Phu Xuan, and Truong Tien Bridge, the Tomb of Minh Mang, Hon Chen Shrine and Thien Mu Pagoda.
