Remote and decidedly off-the-beaten-track this is rustic luxury at its very best
To the far south of the archipelago is Guludo Beach Lodge. A little more rustic in style and certainly more affordable, but no less perfect in its location. Guludo sits on a long stretch of untouched coastline and its eco-friendly credentials are well earned. Don’t expect silver service here: it is all about its remote, adventurous and unspoilt location.
This lodge is focused on its community and offers responsible tourism; the owners of Guludo have personally set up a charity to assist the local community. The seafood offered is fresh local produce, simply and beautifully prepared. When you visit Guludo you can immerse yourself in the local culture and learn about life in Mozambique. The lodge’s environment and surroundings are very unspoilt and respectful of nature and its history, providing a real ‘getaway’ resort. Leave your laptops and mobile phones at home and immerse yourself in this beautiful and uplifting place.
Accommodation is in bandas or suites. The latter are co-joined bandas to give extra room for families or those wishing to have a separate living room. Each one has its own ensuite bathroom, and because there is no electricity in the bandas you will enjoy the glow of paraffin lamps to illuminate your evenings. High ceilings and alfresco bathrooms keep the bandas cool without the use of air-conditioning.
Your private verandah faces the beach and has a Swahali-style seat, a hammock and sun loungers. You can even see the sea from your king-sized bed which is raised upon a platform. Everything that can be is made locally, as the lodge employs local labour whenever possible and water is solar-heated: this is back-to-basics in the most stunning location.
Map and travel information
The easiest and most direct way to reach Mozambique from the UK is via Johannesburg (11 hours) and then onwards to Pemba (2 hours 45 minutes).
By air from Pemba to Matemo on a 20 minute light aircraft flight and then by boat to Guludo beach. Helicopter transfers are available and, for the brave, the resort is reachable by a four hour (bumpy!) drive through the Quirimbas National Park.
