Avid Instagram followers can’t have failed to notice Sir David Attenborough’s arrival on the platform, smashing records and finding a new way to get his message across. For those of us who love to travel, explore and learn, this presents a dilemma. How can we continue to do what we love, without breaking the planet?

Perhaps we need to be more selective. Travel a little less but travel much better. Look at off-setting our carbon footprint, minimising fuel-consumption and selecting destinations that not only give something to us, but also back to their communities and environment.

We have selected a few top picks to get you thinking about how and where you could travel to next year, knowing that you are keeping your environmental impact to the minimum.

Out in Africa

According to our Africa specialist Lucie Thaxter, few places genuinely meet sustainability criteria like Africa.  All of the camps that we work with pursue ambitious sustainability goals, usually focusing on the ‘4 C’s’ of conservation, commerce, community and culture.

Due to the ‘low impact, high revenue’ model followed by the properties that we choose, visitors paying conservation fees as part of their safari are actively contributing to the long term management of the people, wildlife and land, to such an extent that it’s equivalent to them carbon offsetting in most places.

Tanzania‘s Dunia Camp is the only camp in Africa run entirely by women and pioneers the advancement of women in a traditionally male dominated society and workplace. Located in the central Serengeti and surrounded by golden savannah, this area sees millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles migrating around the Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara. You might even be lucky enough to watch the vast herds grazing without leaving camp.
