day one
Arrive in San Juan
Check into hotel (stay in the Metro area) and spend the afternoon at leisure to enjoy the hotel’s facilities.
Head to San Juan’s Condado neighbourhood for dinner. Lined with a plethora of beachfront eateries, the bustling area offers plenty of options for a welcome dinner. To get acquainted with Caribbean cuisine, head to Cayo Caribe (Puerto Rican), Ruben’s Cafe (Dominican) or Ropa Vieja Grill (Cuban). For travellers looking for something more familiar, the Hard Rock Cafe San Juan or its neighbour Buns Burger Shop are sure to please.
day TWO
Explore the forts and Old San Juan
Breakfast at La Bombonera. This iconic Spanish-style café and bakery opened back in 1902 and is still popular amongst locals and tourists today. The Mallorca – a sweet bun topped with powdered sugar and served with butter, or split open for a ham and cheese sandwich – is a must.
Explore San Juan’s iconic forts. The San Felipe del Morro and San Cristóbal castles are icons of the island and a wonderful lens to view San Juan’s rich history. Towering, 500-year-old fortress walls provide breath-taking views of the ocean and surrounding area, and the sprawling fields beyond the gates of El Morro are a perfect place to fly a kite (a fun local tradition).
Spend the afternoon exploring Old San Juan, the oldest city in the United States, with a history dating back over 500 years. Discover the rich, intense story of the city by exploring its charming streets, local restaurants and iconic historical sites.
Early dinner at La Placita. This 100-year-old two-tiered market square, that once sold fresh, local ingredients to San Juan’s residents, is now a bustling haven for foodies and culture fanatics alike. Established restaurants spill out into the open whilst the glorious cacophony of market vendors, selling their fruit and vegetable wares, fills the air – the crumbling creole charm is undeniable. But it’s from 6pm every evening that the market really comes to life. As the evening goes on, you can dance salsa or merengue to live music, listen to jazz, enjoy rock bands, or sing karaoke – all fuelled by the stalls selling fried foods like empanadillas, alcapurrias and bacalaitos. History, food and nightlife are all in one place.
day three
Hike El Yunque
Breakfast at leisure.
Rent a car and head to Rio Grande, El Yunque. Spend the morning hiking in El Yunque. For energetic travellers, it doesn’t get much better than a hike through El Yunque – the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. – followed by a refreshing swim in a cool waterfall pool.
Drive to Hacienda Carabalí in time for lunch. From horseback riding through the forest to the beach, to enjoying a thrilling quad-biking excursion, a stop at this ranch is guaranteed to be
action-packed.
Enjoy a refreshing coconut at the Luquillo Kiosks. A strip of over 50 stalls of all kinds of food imaginable – from traditional Puerto Rican food to Southern BBQ – but nothing beats a cold coconut water to quench your thirst after an action-packed morning.
Spend the rest of the afternoon at Luquillo Balneario. You won’t go wrong at Balneario La Monserrate, a beautiful stretch of beach with ample parking, rest rooms and changing rooms, outdoor showers, and more than 25 gazebos for gathering with family and friends.
Or, head to Seven Seas Beach to enjoy the afternoon at leisure on one of the island’s best beaches.
day four
Drive to the mountains & Toro Verde Restaurant
Breakfast at leisure.
Drive through the Central Mountains to Orocovis. Away from the coast is la Cordillera Central, Puerto Rico’s interior mountain region, which runs from East to West through 15 municipalities. With a history and culture rooted in agriculture, this region has diverse vegetation and produces most of the island’s coffee, which you can taste at several haciendas.
Grab some snacks for lunch and continue to Toro Verde Nature Adventure Park. An ecological adventure park with unforgettable ziplining experiences, Toro Verde Adventure Park offers rolling verdant vistas and a whole host of adventure.
Ride the famous “Monster” Zipline. America’s longest zipline and the world’s second longest, embarking on this adventure offers endless views as well as countless thrills. It is recommended that you book this excursion in advance.
Early dinner at Toro Verde Restaurant Drive back to San Juan whilst it’s still light and return rental car. Overnight at hotel.
day five
Day at leisure in San Juan
Breakfast at hotel.
Day at leisure to explore San Juan. For a last-minute chill, enjoy the city beaches of Condado or Isla Verde. Art lovers can head off to the hip neighbourhood of Santurce for some museum hopping whilst food connoisseurs can try a little bit of everything from the local food stalls in Lote 23 or Miramar Food Truck Park. Or, shop like a local at Plaza Las Américas, the largest mall in the Caribbean.
Return to the hotel, before one last Puerto Rican dinner. Prepare for a late transfer to airport for your flight home.
