The Alps are one of the most stunning mountain ranges in the world, and during summer they reach their full potential. From snow-capped peaks to lush valleys filled with wildflowers, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this neck of the woods. Experience some of Europe’s most breathtaking scenery, with the largest selection of outdoor activities right on your doorstep. Whether it’s hiking through meadows full of alpine flowers or taking a scenic drive along winding roads, there is no shortage of things to do when visiting the Alps during summertime.

Hiking through flower-filled meadows or along rocky trails winding through mountain passes is an understandably popular activity among visitors to the Alps. This type of trekking allows you to get up close to nature and take in all its beauty, while at the same time giving you an excellent workout – just think of all those steps you’ll get in! Just breathe in the fresh, peaceful mountain air and you’ll feel as though you’ve entered another world.

Mountain biking is another great way to explore the Alpine terrain, with numerous dedicated routes dotting the region. Take in spectacular views from your two-wheeler as you wind your way along the trails, effortlessly crisscrossing from one beautiful valley to another. Or, if you’re near Zermatt, try Dirt Scooting along the foot of the north face of the Matterhorn. This is an all-terrain downhill scooter that takes you quickly and safely from the mountain to the valley, starting in Schwarzsee.

For a more relaxed sightseeing adventure, jump onto the Glacier Express – probably one of the best train journeys in the world. Travel from St. Moritz to Zermatt via Chur, Andermatt, and Brig, but you can hop on and off wherever you want, exploring each of the wonderful stops along the way. Many choose to do the full journey over a couple of days but it can be done in one full day too. The most scenic part of the ride is the section between Chur and St. Moritz, where you’ll travel over the often-photographed Landwasser viaduct that ends in a tunnel. Summer is one of the most popular times to go and there are up to four trips per day over this period.

While skiing and snowboarding (obviously) aren’t at their peak during summertime, there are still plenty of opportunities for those looking for a thrilling ride down snow-covered slopes. Many resorts remain open throughout summer months and offer chairlifts, ski lifts and cable cars for access up into higher elevations where the snow remains. Be warned though, these runs are often more challenging than you may be used to during winter. For the lively freestyle fans like me, there is one of the highest freestyle spots in the Alps, the Snowpark Zermatt.

Millions of animals live within the Alps, making wildlife spotting a fun and satisfying experience for those interested. Ibex and chamois can be spotted easily during summer months when they come out in search of food. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to see here, including golden eagles, ravens and black woodpeckers that soar above mountain passes or nest near lakes and rivers.

Finally, and some would say most importantly, summertime is the perfect season to discover the many vineyards that dot throughout the region. Local wineries produce delicious white wines such as Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which pair perfectly with traditional cheese fondue and roasted venison dishes found in many restaurant menus throughout this area.
